King’s Lynn was originally called Bishop Lynn and was part of the manor of
the Bishop of Norwich. In the middle ages the town, which lies at the mouth
of the Great Ouse, was the third largest port in England.
After the Second World War King’s Lynn was designated a London Expansion
Town and its population almost doubled as people relocated from the capital.
In 2004 a multi-million pound regeneration scheme was launched and since
then thousands of new homes have been built and projects such as the
refurbishment of the 1960s shopping centre completed.
The town is popular with tourists during the summer, the historic waterfront
and Customs House fronted by a statue of explorer Captain George
Vancouver, being the main attractions.
There is a frequent rail service to Cambridge allowing easy onward travel to
London King’s Cross.
